Recommended Gear and Products for Special Needs Dogs

Below is a list of some of the most useful gear, equipment, and tools that I’ve discovered. I use these in my Seattle area “special needs” dog boarding business. Whether your dogs are reactive, elderly, recovering from a medical event or all of the above – this list of products and links can make your life, and your dog’s life, safer and easier to manage 🙂

Dog Reactivity Products

Spray Shield

My favorite dog fight break-up spray. I have used this several times on my own dog, and it worked every time. It even works when your dog has a hold of a squirrel. The squirrel survived!

It works instantly (assuming your aim is good) and dog is left unharmed, albeit smelling like citrus. I never left the house without it. Clip it on your leash for walks, or have around the house in easy to grab locations.

Italian Basket Dog Muzzles

These are the very best muzzles, in my opinion, and will last a lifetime. Here’s the sizing chart.

If sized properly, they allow your dog to eat, drink, and pant while wearing it.

Use this muzzle during training situations where you want to make sure everyone stays safe, or at the vet, or any situation where there is a possibility your dog may bite.

I added a piece of neoprene over the nose bridge because my dog wore this during training sessions, and would push hard to reach treats I’d slip into the end. I looked at the Ultra Muzzles, but that opening by the nose worries me. My dog once (wearing a Mikki muzzle before I got smarter) bit a piece of ear off another dog, so the Ultra Muzzle space around the nose just makes me nervous – I can picture an ear slipping into it and getting bitten off. I do have clients that like them though.

MidWest Exercise Pen

If you have a reactive dog, it helps to have an emergency fence handy to slow down off leash dogs from reaching your dog. I used several of these in a big circle around campsites. You can also use them around a covered crate as an emergency “shelter” for your reactive dog while you are training.

Thundershirt for Anxiety

For dogs who are anxious, the Thundershirt can provide a calming effect.

They have a 30 day money-back guarantee so it’s worth trying it out to see if this particular anti-anxiety tool works for your dog.

Midwest Exercise Pen Top

This is an amazing and incredibly useful addition to make your Midwest Exercise Pen into a Super Crate! Use it indoors to create a Super Crate for your dog – the top prevents jumping out or jumping in. Use it outdoors to create a Kennel area. It’s 4 feet on each side, which corresponds to two MidWest Exercise Pen panels. It creates a 4 foot x 4 foot pen/crate/kennel with a top. It gives a tremendous amount of stability to the structure, and it quite heavy. My clients have not found a need to stake it down, but since all Midwest Ex Pens come with stakes, you certainly could stake it down.

Orthopedic Memory Foam Pet Bed with Washable Cover and Plastic Removable Inner Cover

This is absolutely the best bed for old and incontinent dogs I have found – and it costs much less than many regular beds that are neither orthopedic nor easily washable.

This bed has super thick 4″ thick memory foam. It has an inner plastic zippered cover that’s easily wiped off. And it has an outer suede cover that zips off off for washing. Incredibly nice bed and really easy to clean for older dogs who may leak urine while they sleep.

Help ‘Em Up Harness and Ruff Wear Harness

I love both these harness companies – if your dog has mobility issues, having a harness that’s comfortable enough to wear all day without rubbing, and that has a nice handle is a necessity. They can help with mobility (getting up from laying down, balance while walking), double as a seat-belt, help give you more control of their bodies in tight spaces, like at the vet.

Mini Oil Heater to Keep Elderly, Short Coated Dogs Warm

I used this small heater to keep an elderly dog warm in my laundry room during daytime and overnights.

This heater out plenty of heat to keep a small room very comfortable when house thermostat is set down to 55F at night. Note: I used a barrier (exercise pen/baby gate) around the heater to prevent the dog from making contact with it.

MidWest Exercise Pen

Elderly dogs often have wills that exceed their actual capacity for activity. Use exercise pens to keep dogs within smaller areas in the yard, or inside your house. Some versions have built in gates if you’re using them as a playpen.

Dog Diapers

Do dog diapers work? Yes they do. The quality of these diapers is really impressive. To capture urine, use two incontinence pads (or period pads if it’s just a dribble) in a “V” shape. In this configuration, when the dog lays on it’s side, the urine is captured by whichever side of the V is lower. It has a hole for tail, so if your dog is going to poo in the diaper, it’s best to cut out a larger opening to let the poo escape the diaper. Works best for urine.

 UV Flashlight to Detect Urine

A must-have if you have an incontinent dog that may pee in the house in places you don’t suspect, like carpets. It comes with glasses that do actually help visualize the pee spots. Be brave and turn it on!

Netgear VueZone

My totally amazing dog monitoring system! You can purchase extra cameras to add to the system. Note that the night vision needs the special night light, which is why I chose this model. Here’s a link to an add on Motion Detector camera to expand your system.

Recovery and General Products

“Perfect Form” Herbal Digestive Supplement by Honest Kitchen

I used this whenever poop got a bit soft or when transitioning from one food to another. You simply add it to their food, it’s a powder.

It works very well, but not all dogs like the taste. Sometimes pet stores like All the Best will give you a small packet as a sample to see if the dogs like it. I tasted it and it was acceptable 🙂

Black & Decker Nail Dremel

I got tired of constantly replacing short-lived batteries on the Dremel Rechargable Dog Nail File and bought this really nice corded, three speed tool. I with I had bought this years ago. It’s way more powerful and puts out consistent RPM than the Dremel tool that’s marketed as a dog nail dremel, and the price is nearly the same.

legBraceOrthoPets Leg Braces

If your dog tears their ACL and you want to do conservative management, give the OrthoPets website a look over and see if they can help. They’re custom fitted just for your dog from a casting you send them of your dog’s limb. (they provide the casting kit). Makes your dog look bionic!

Soft “Comfy” Cone Collar

A superior replacement for those hard plastic “cone of shame” that your vet sent your dog home in. Easier on their necks, easier on your legs, easier on your furniture! If you know your dog is going in for a procedure, buy this Comfy Cone ahead of time.

Note: I could not find this specific brand at local big box petstores like Petco or PetSmart, nor could I find the size I needed at local small pet stores.

MidWest Exercise Pen

These are incredibly useful to have in your collection of dog gear.

They can be used indoors or outdoors, whenever you need to keep a dog in a specific area, or out of a specific area. They are available in many different sizes, and you can get some with doors if you plan to use them as a playpen.

North States Super Gate Baby Gate

After trying out three other baby gate brands, I decided to spend the extra money and get ones I really liked. These are very well made, and easy to open one handed. They swing in both directions. They stay open, and will also auto swing shut. Just a wonderful replacement for those wooden cheap baby gates that you have to constantly step over. One dog I boarded tried to eat her way out of the wooden baby gate – this one is metal, no chewing!
